What is a Commercial Diver?
A commercial diver is a professional who engages in underwater construction, maintenance, and engineering. Their job is primarily to build and maintain underwater infrastructures used in oil and gas production.
If you are searching for a change of pace or don’t like the idea of a nine to five, a diver schedule may sound more appealing. Instead of a standard Monday – Friday schedule, divers can expect to work out at sea anywhere between two to six weeks at a time. During this period, they can expect to work at least 12-hour days. These jobs are often physically strenuous and demanding but extremely rewarding.
What are Commercial Diving Career Requirements?
Becoming a commercial diver takes determination and a love for underwater industrial construction. Basic commercial diving requirements include the following:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must have high school diploma, GED, or equivalent
- Must be proficient in reading and writing
- Must pass a diving physical
- Must have a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC). This identification is necessary to access secure areas of maritime vessels and facilities.
Commercial divers need to be in top physical condition to complete tasks safely and efficiently. It’s an adventurous job, but it does come with associated risks.
What is a Commercial Diver Salary?
Salaries vary based upon location, job type, and even the time of year. However, commercial divers are typically estimated to make somewhere between $40,000 – $60,000. Experienced divers can make anywhere up to $100,000.
